4 Math Problems! Factoring, Standard Line, Solve for K, Solving a System?
There is two that I have done and want to see if they are right, and two I have no idea how to do.
1.) Factor Completely
x^2-16
(x+4)(x-4)
2.) Write the equation in standard form through the point (3,3) and (-2,-7)
standard form is Ax+By=C
so, 3(-2)+3(-7)=C
3.) k(k-3) = 28 ; for k
i tried distributing, but that ended up not working for some reason
so i tried dividing the k out right at the beginning
it just confused me
4.) 3x-2y=48
4x+3y=30
i was thinking i had to use the elimination method, but it's been a while
number 1 is right you have to complete the square
number 2 is not right you have to first put it in y=mx+b then expand to standard form so first find the slope therefore y=3+7 over 3+2 which equals 10 over 5 which makes the slope 2 therefore you have y=2x+b then sub in a point to find the y intercept(b) y=2x+b
3=2(3)+b
3=6+b
-3 =b
therfore your equation is y=2x-3 and now make it into standard form by bringing the y to the other side therefore your final equation is 0=2x-y-3
number 3 you are right you have to use distribute property
k(k-3)=28
k^2-3k=28 bring the 28 to the other side
k^2-3k-28=0 now you can factor or use the quadratic formula i factored
(k-7)(k+4)=0
k-7=0 k+4=0
k=7 k=-4
therfore k is -4 or 7
number 4 you could use elimination or substitution i will use elimination
so for elimination you must make either or x or y the same. i will make both x the same by multiplying equation 1 by 4 and equation 2 by 3
3x-2y=48 1 multiply by 4 12x-8y=192
4x+3y=30 2 multiply by 3 12x+9y=90 now subtract them
-17y=102 divide both sides by -17
y=-6
now sub y=-6 into either equation i used equation 1
3x-2y=48
3x-2(-6)=48
3x+12=48
3x=36
x=2
therfore the answer is (2, -6)
