Soft Plastic Minnows
Do we need to use jighead or sinker when using soft plastic?
I am thinking to use sand worm and minnow for river/estuary fishing.
Can I just use normal hook and unweighted?
What is the importance using weighted hooks?
Good question! You know, everyone has their own preference though and it comes from the success what they are used too and what has worked. Here's a few things that are given:
Fish will 99.9% of the time be facing into the current
You have to use weight in any current.
You have to cast upstream (bringing the bait back to the boat or sideline with the current) (this allows the bait to be presented to the fish in the most natural way) (when fishing against the current if your bait comes up from behind the fish it scares them away not into biting)
Fishing the bottom will take a certain weight amount I used 5/8 oz in rapid moving bays and estuaries, and 3/8 oz in slower moving water.
swim baits and worms on leadheads present the baits in current more naturally with the back up and the belly down. A sliding sinker or swiveled weight with allow the baits to roll not swim (not that fish won't pick up and eat the dead rolling past 'em offerings) but ...they very softly pick them up and you can miss the bite. Conversely when a bait is swimming by naturally, they get hit harder (so you know they are there immediately) I am sure because they sense that while swimming, the food source might get away and they more aggressively want it now. Try painting or fingernail polishing the lead heads to match the color of the baits you use and use super glue to hold them on the leadhead for up to thirty casts and catches.
Secret 261) I sometimes on a really tough bite (but I know they are there, just not biting) I will insert the leadhead into the swim baits but instead of bringing the hook out of the middle of the back (on top), I bring it out on the side. I then bring the bait off the bottom fast (about a foot up) letting the tail wag and let it fall tail stiff (appearing life less) and then let it roll with the current one second. This immulates a severly damaged baitfish and (all preditors have to take advantage of eating the weak and dying) I cast out past where they stack up and walk back bringing it up fast and down slow, up fast and down slow, all the way back to the boat. It most certainly will trigger bites even from well fed fish.
