how, i am just getting into saltwater fishing, how do i string fish with a fish stringer?

i see the straight needle like end of the string, then all up and down the string there are "rings" that open, how do i attach fish to these, and since i am fishing in the gulf, is it safe to just string the fish and let them swim freely until i leave?
What you have there is a stringer with very large "snaps " on them.
It's usually metal ( like a cheap chain) but I have seen them modified by using rope of some sort. The snaps are either made with plastic or metal. Then you have the original stringer; a long rope with a looped metal on one end and a sharp shaft on the other...these are called "mill run" stringers.
By your question, it sounds like you have a modified mill run with snaps on it. What you want to do is open the snaps, insert the pointed end of the snap into the lower jaw (from underneath) and pull it out the mouth of the fish. Close the snap. Never go througth the gills, the fish will die fast and you may want to throw out the shorties while fishing for bigger ones. The idea of the pointed end (the shaft) is to insert it into the ground and then you can continue fishing. This holds true but past experience has taught me to place a large rock or something heavy on top of the shaft while it's in the ground. Hope that helps. Good luck catchin'.
