How safe is Gulf shrimp in terms of methylmercury and PCBs?
I'm interested in how insurance is compared shrimp with cod, orange roughy, farmed salmon, wild Alaskan salmon, etc. Is there an online guide that lists all the fish according to their safety, especially in terms of levels of PCBs? I live in Corpus Christi, Texas, so there is a line source that I can say about methylmercury / PCB levels in the Bay of Corpus Christi? Thanks!
Fish to avoid high-mercury: Atlantic halibut, mackerel, oysters (Gulf Coast), pike, bass, shark, swordfish, tilefish (golden snapper), tuna (albacore and canned meats). High COP farmed salmon. Limit once per month during pregnancy / Lactation. TheGreenGuide.com Check for updates on POPs in farmed fish than mercury. Fish to eat the gift:. Moderate Crab Alaskan halibut, black cod, blue (Gulf Coast) crab, cod, Dungeness crab, oysters from the East, mahimahi, mussels, pollack, tuna (canned). (Children and pregnant women or nursing are advised to eat no more than one of this list once a month.) Low mercury anchovies, char crawfish, Pacific flounder, herring, king crab, sanddabs, scallops, Pacific sole, tilapia, wild salmon from Alaska and the Pacific, farmed catfish, clams, striped bass and sturgeon. (And women pregnant or nursing children can eat two or three times a week.) Take note, however, that low-mercury but overfished species or destructively harvested - such as Atlantic cod, Atlantic flounder, Atlantic flounder bass, Chilean sea, monkfish, orange roughy, shrimp, and snapper - should be avoided by means of the good. COP Baja Wild: Alaska, California and salmon (fresh or preserved health). Check with your state department POP advisories before eating fish from local waters. The final word limit fish consumption by category, not individual species. For example, both cod and mahimahi are moderate mercury fish, and only one in this category should be eaten per month - not a meal of cod and mahimahi. If you are at high risk to a group, do not eat the skin and parts where COP fatty fish gather. Eat grilled, baked, broiled, not fried fish, to avoid fat. - And finally do not be intimidated by the prospect to remember all this information that do not have to. Just download the Green Guide's Fish Picks card [PDF], a number of pocket guide the size of fish and shellfish by hand. For more information on the fish and prevent fish can swallow safely, see Environmental Working Group web page, announcements on the website EPA'sFish, and EPA National Listing of Fish and Wildlife Notices.
