Steelhead Fishing on the Muskegon River
Anglers love nothing better than to fight a winter rainbow trout in Michigan Muskegon River in Newaygo. These fish are powerful known as hot chrome torpedoes and can weigh up to 20 pounds. Just having one in their line is the thrill of a lifetime and most of the Steelhead Michigan steels are wild.
The migration season rainbow trout from late October, after the Chinook are finished spawning. Peak months fishing for rainbow trout are November and December, when the fish being their spawning migration. These beauties end the migration towards the end of February and early March.

Steelhead feed in the Muskegon River in fall and are very aggressive. They eat almost anything passes close to them in this time of year. Wooly buggers and egg patterns work best in fall and early winter and wet flies and spey.
If you are fishing in the Muskegon River in late winter and early spring, use small nymphs and egg patterns with a light leader. This is the time they are less aggressive steelheads. Do not chase the flies as they do in the fall.
In spring, steelheads be more aggressive, but in particular on what to hit. This is the time to use light leaders and small nymphs. Steelheads enter the Muskegon River for the next spawn on gravel tracks.
The best way for rainbow trout fishing in the Muskegon River is by boat. This allows you to get tracks and pools that can not be accessed by wading, though steelhead can be caught by this method. A good place to ford the rainbow trout is in the Thornapple Avenue launch in Newark, which is not far below Croton Dam.
