perch fishing techniques
What are the best techniques for catching fish from the shore?

I will be fishing for native species such as walleye (pickerel,) bass, trout, muskie, sucker, perch, whatever will bite! Any ideas on how to better my chances with these species?
I am in northwestern ontario canada

SEA wrote; the longer the rod, the longer cast you will make!.
~~This is not necessarily correct, you can have 2-Rods one being a 11-foot and the other a 10-foot Rod. The 10-foot Rod will cast further then the 11-foot Rod. The reason for this is, guide spacing and the butt guide, is either going to choke the line while it comes off the reel or if spaced for distance will not choke the line and cast further.~~

Now for the question at hand.
I would pick walleye and advice for a Rod and Reel you feel comfortable with. Either Casting or Spinning, medium to light action Rod. These Rods will give you the best hook setting ability.
When it comes to ultra light the Rod doesn't have the power to hook as the medium or light action, but offer tons of action once the fish is hooked.
When it comes to Reels one of the most important factor is the drag system. It must be smooth and allow easy setting. A drag setting should be for the line test that you will use, 10-lb test then set the drag for 10-lb test. The only time you would not set your drag to the same line test is when the line is Tournament for record fish. This line is designed to conform with all IGFA specifications, this type of line will break prior to reaching the line test advertised, to insure your record fish was caught at that line test.
8-lb test is a great choice to start with, for larger lures you will be using 14-20-lb test. And don't forget to set the drag to the Reel line test.

Walleye bait rig; This is a very simple rig which consist of your monofilament line, lead weight, more then a couple of beads, small spinner blade, and hook. Tipped with minnow and fished slowly. Your rig will produces excellent results.

Pickerel bait rig; Spinner baits come in many colors but the most popular colors are yellow, chartreuse and white with silver or gold blades. For less $$$ bait and my choice is to tie on a spinner bait, start fishing the edge of the weed beds. This is a "wow" bait for Canadian pike there is no way you'll go wrong.
You can also use the Rapala husky Jerk, rat-l-trap, smithwick rogue.

I've never met a Fishermen or women who came to catch only Fish, they come for the action and thrill and lets not forget the strike and fight.

Oh, don't forget your camera, best of luck.
