Chincoteague waters offer a variety of opportunities for fishermen at sea. Spring weather is usually windy and boats do not often get to fish outside the entrance at the beginning of the season. When a calm day presents, anglers can catch bass or sea Tautog local shipwrecks and artificial reefs.

In June, monster bluefish arrive and are often present in large quantities along the line of 20 fathoms. This fishing usually amounts to a journey of 25 to 30 nautical miles from the entrance.
