Fishing and golf in Guatemala

For a population of about 14 million people living in a country the size of Tennessee, golf is still largely an elitist sport, but that is starting to change.

The country is home to five courses and to date has comfortably settled in the country two thousand or more active players. The latest addition to this stable of courses of the International Meeting is just 11 miles outside the former capital and World Heritage Site of Antigua.

The course is based on the 1380-acres of a former coffee plantation in the shadows of four volcanoes, Agua, Fuego and Pacaya Acatenango. It was the appropriately named "Pendant" Maya or Firefox - and was designed by renowned architect Pete Dye course.

The course is relatively long, but even an average golfer should be able to complete the round in under 4 hours.

The golfer avergae enjpys almost perfect conditions almost all rounds to be played here.

The air temperature is comfortably hot from early morning until sunset - and then later becomes cool at night.

A perfect end to a great round is to enjoy a cool glass of Gallo in the nineteenth hole and debate about the shot that got away and what could or shuld have been.

The fishing this past week has ranged from excellent to harsh - like the weather!
