Fiji Islands Saltwater Fishing Report - September 2008
- Charter operator - Matav Resort Gamefishing
- Average Temp - 26.0
- AverageWeather - Yes, decidedly average. Often 20kts and rough days, occasional excellent
- Water Clarity - Variable inshore, good sea
The fickle winter weather conditions continued to frustrate with weeks of trade wind chop days separated by perfect weather and large numbers of fish. Wahoo and sails have dominated with a lot of winter to the yellow variety added.
Warmer water currents moved through in August to ease the wahoo bite a little, but with it came a large number of mahi mahi to deal with excellent light action. Most are small about 20 pounds, but some good bulls Mixed 50 lbs.
Overall, the winter season wahoo up to initial expectations, primarily due to unusually poor weather. The love GT but nothing else barrier reefs crashing breakers and Popper casting has been and is still quite exceptional.
Still nice and a few black Marlin along the edge of the reef to cope with the heavy fans who do not mind spending all day watching her carefully manipulated baits being crushed by the razor gang. Its usually worth the effort when a large black swallows a bait and puts on a spectacular air display normal.
October will see game boats start to move at sea and the dust of the heavy tackle Marlin blue and yellow of the main objectives. We expect the usual catch of mahi mahi, wahoo and the occasional spearfish made a brave attempt to eat a 18 "Attract the needle.
Our biggest catch? A black marlin at 320 pounds she smashed the existing M-130 Fiji National Record and Peter decided to weigh the fish. The first documented black Kadavu Great Astrolabe Reef, to my knowledge tipped the scales just under 320 pounds. Just a great but what a start it is! Our intention is to take every opportunity to continue fishing for Kadavu island black marlin and tag the release and to paint a clear picture of their habits and seasons.
Since the sightings by divers and our own experiences of Black marlin here, our goal is to find Fiji's first Grander. Sometimes it's fun to be a pattern charterboat .....
