Big Game Fishing, Bangkok - Interview with John Pearce Wahoo's

Interview with John Pearce Wahoo fishing around Phuket

Article written by Simon Ramsden in Thailand

Simon: What changes have you noticed since I started fishing in Phuket?

John: In the last two decades of Phuket has earned the right to be classified as a real destination for great sport fishing, offers boats, infrastructure and standard hotels wealthy fishermen wait. During the past eighteen years I have lived and fishing the waters around Phuket as a fishing captain, the letter I have seen many changes, some better, some for the worse - and some things have not changed at all.

Simon: Has worsened the fishing?

John: It has not worsened, it is different as the fish have changed to be always on an island suddenly appearing on an island or another, in greater numbers. My own personal observation of what happens is that we have seen a massive increase in the number of commercial vessels to pursue what I call "bait", not only for human consumption, such as fish sauce, but also for the manufacture of feed for chickens. Fish are creatures of habit and if suddenly the food they were used to get into a particular place, there is nothing more than move and find another source.

Simon: So with everything that happens is a good fishing destination Phuket?

Juan: Of course it is! Many of our fishermen have had the best battles of his life, especially with the large number of sailfish around the islands of Racha Yai and Racha Noi, even in the tourist season from May to September. Some fishermen are lucky, even gone to have had the thrill of catching one of the good-sized black marlin that appear between October and April.

Simon: Why Why come to Phuket?

John: I have been fortunate to have visited some of the big fish capitals of the world, so I hope that gives the main reasons why you should put Phuket on the map of destinations if you are a fishing enthusiast. Let's start with the international community airport, which is very near most of our two-star and five star hotels and up and is linked to most countries, either directly or through Bangkok. The Thais are the most friendly and popular smiliest on the planet. They serve great food, mouth watering delicious and varied. The island is blessed with beautiful beaches and offers activities excellent and varied alternatives for non-fishing companions. Phuket offers some of the best fishing spots found in Asia, it ships with a reasonable price and have a friendly crew, many of whom can speak reasonable English. So if you are on holiday and fancy or fishing days a week, please contact one of the local operators and have a ball. And I forgot: we won cold beer too!
