inshore grouper fishing
Fishing - Best saltwater spinning reel?
The reel will be used primarily for inshore fishing in the gulf. Small grouper, mackeral, jack, snook, reds, etc. I have a 7' MH rod. I'm looking to spend no more than $150. I've been looking at the Quantum Energy, Quantum Catalyst, Shimano Stradic, Shimano Spheros, Daiwa Tournament SS and Daiwa Black Gold. Has anybody had any luck with any of these? Or recommend another reel?

I would narrow my search to the Shimano Stradic, Daiwa Black Gold, Quantum Catalyst, and add the Penn Slammer and ( if you plan to use a lot of live bait) the Shimano Bait-runner.
Don't get the Quantum Energy, Shimano Spheros or SS Daiwa. Although these aren't "bad" reels the latter are "better".
Obviously, this outfit will be an Inshore outfit?
Narrowing down what "style" of fishing you will mainly be doing will help you to decide which reel is best for you -
1. Black Gold- If you plan to soak a lot of bait on bottom and do a lot of jetty/pier fishing I'd look hard at the Daiwa Black Gold. They are cheap, (you could get 2 for the price of a Stradic), built like a tank and are esp well suited to get "banged around" on rocks and piers due to it's all metal structure. 2. Shimano Stradic - Simply? A great reel with a variety of sizes to fit a variety of situations. A bit expensive. To be honest, any of these reels would be "worthy".
