I imagine you are reef/wreck or heavy structure fishing?

Big reef/wreck Grouper tend to have a "hole" in structure they call their home.

When initially "stuck" with the hook, they tend to immediately run into a "hole" and hide. These holes are usually barnacle laden and will cut you off easily.

For this reason, most Grouper fishermen use 80-150LB Mono/Flurocarbon leaders. If you use a wire leader you will diminish your hook-up percentage by 50%-60%. They tend to notice the wire and shy away.......

The only way to not get cut off is by using brute strength to get the Grouper away from the wreck ASAP.

Lock down your drag and fight him away from the wreck/reef!
