Halong Bay, Vietnam - Kayak is Best of Asia?
Exotic Destinations: Halong Bay Vietnam
Vietnam is a small country dominated by a large coastline. Its limited slip, S-shaped land lying between the Mekong Delta in the south and the river delta Red in the north and meets the South China Sea in a dramatic and sweeping 1500 miles of beautiful beaches, traditional fishing villages, capes and bays filled with impressive islands. Halong Bay is a huge body of calm water that contains thousands of limestone islands with fantastic form. It competes with Thailand Phang Nga Bay as the best SE Asia kayak tropical destination.
Sunset on Halong Bay off the northeast coast of Vietnam creates a scene that defines the East. The silhouette of limestone columns, to go back to the sea from the thinnest of bases, assuming that perfection of proportion and how to make fun of the whole man-made sculpture as imitation naive. For centuries, the harmony of this adventure has inspired a whole school of painting Vietnamese. To drift into a yawning trash under overhangs and see the light dim transform peaks of rock and foliage of the forest fringe figures of giants is, for a few moments, to be part of a timeless Asian landscape.
A dream come true Kayak - Kayak Halong travel
After the crew had good character Dragon us welcomed on board and loaded our double kayaks on the roof of the cabin, we hit the road, away from Bai Chay and in another world. And what a world that turned out to be. My ability of wonder and awe at the site growing as paddling through stunning islands wrapped in thick vegetation falling explored spectacular sea arches, landscaped gardens rock, spectacular caves and gold ribbons beaches. The guide was excellent navigation skills essential in a complex landscape.
After of hours in the kayaks to return to the support boat, which had a large deck, covered with tables and benches where you can relax and socialize, and a cook who had been sent to us from heaven. Lien, besides being blessed with a beauty and sweet character, had the gift of being able to shake the eight-course banquet in a small kitchen area, more than two-burner kerosene. A lunchtime shouts of joy was heard from the boat as an excellent dish after another was placed in front of us. The best seafood imaginable - Lobster, shrimp, crab, a variety of fish and delicate spring rolls, fragrant soups, fried meat and vegetables, all exquisitely prepared. While we ate, we saw out in a stunning panorama of islands stretching endlessly in all directions, which leads us to deepen the bay to discover its deep secrets and ancient mysteries.
One days kayaking in a misty dawn. Next, through the mist, strange shapes had begun to materialize. limestone rocks of pure water rose to several hundred feet. It is strange hump and at an angle, cracked prints, caves and arches and improbably tree cover. As we walked past them, increasingly appeared in tight rows back in the fog, like some trick mirrors were creating the illusion of hundreds of these islands surreal. But there were hundreds of them, creating a scene directly from some mysterious ancient oriental painting to credence to the legends of this great bay, that the islands were formed of stone thrown up by dragons, sea monsters and still lurk in its waters.
Towards the end of our third day of gentle rowing three hours a day, we found a small temple on a sandy beach at the base of a cliff. colorful boats paper hanging from his roof. At its altar, brass pots bristling with joss sticks and plates are piled with offerings of fruit, cigarettes and money that let fishermen. One by one, our team of six added to these offers, then, incense sticks and kept them in his hands, bowing toward the altar and praying. In silence and with a little self-conscious, we also paid our respects to the spirits and dragons from the sea, leaving behind our West offers - tickets dollar candy bars and cookies. This scene was to re-enact several times in the coming days, as we found out sanctuaries, beaches nestled amid a thick vegetation, all evidence of having recently been visited by fishermen.
Fishing families in Halong Bay live on board small and simple boats, which are constructed of woven bamboo with pitch. Often the boats are rafted together to form floating "villages." Rowing between the islands often met these people, where smoke rose from coal, radios playing, dogs barking at us from the decks of ships and older children cried enthusiastically, while their younger siblings looked fearfully around a straw cups.
At times, our senses are overwhelmed by what we offered Halong Bay. On our fourth day we paddled in a low tunnel that led under the rock of a cliff island climbing. At the other end of the tunnel is a glimmer of light. Attenuation below stalactites and fending off with oars protruding walls which manoeuvered to her. Beams of our head torches were engulfed by the dark depths and our nervous laughter echoed around us. Gradually, the light expanded and grew in brightness shone in the water. Assuming that we paddled just below the island, which we expect to re-emerge in Halong Bay and see the sights familiar. Instead, he rowed in the heart of this island of limestone, which for centuries had been eaten away by water and wind until it was perfectly hollow and open to the sky.
A deep silence fell over our group kayak kayaking, we went out, blinking, from the dark tunnel in a lagoon surrounded by a circle of vertical walls. The air was still and hot. The only sound was the rallying cry of a solitary bird, hidden somewhere in the dense vegetation, hanging. We floated in the jade-colored water, above of us, framed by sharp stone, the sky was clear, the sun masked by clouds. I hardly dared breath, afraid to break the spell of this garden ethereal this place intact and perfect. Would have been easy to stay there for hours, but the tide dragged through the tunnel and would soon be sealed by the water. Upon leaving, I thought of the immensity of this wonderful bay and how in this and future trips that had much more to discover - sanctuaries, beaches, caves, tunnels, lagoons within the islands - and who knows what else?
After kayak back to our ship sailed into the sunset and, after casting anchor in a creek, lying on the deck to observe meteors flash across the night sky. Out in the bay, the lights of the squid fishermen bobbed on the horizon like fallen stars. Behind us, the giants of rock lit by the moon rise over the tranquil waters and beaches of silver in the eternal rest. In the dark silence, Halong Bay retained its beauty.
