Fishing for Spotted Bass

The spotted bass, although closely related to the smallmouth, is a distinct species of the sunfish family. Its physical appearance is a cross between the largemouth and smallmouth, though it is smaller than either of these fish. Maximum size for spotted bass runs about 18 inches in length and 4 pounds in weight. It is an excellent sporting fish; when taken on a light line this spunky fighter puts any angler to the test. In the southern part of its range, this bass is available year around for some great bass fishing.
Either artificial lures or live bait attract the spotted bass. Spoons, plugs, and spinners are especially effective. Many live bait fishermen use minnows for bait with worms being a close second choice.
The spotted bass prefers pool and riffle streams with a firm bottom, usually sand or gravel as when smallmouth bass fishing. It can often be found in the cool, clear headwaters of such streams. In some parts of its range it moves into deep parts of lakes. For instance in some southern reservoirs the spotted bass inhabits depths of over 100 feet, while small mouths will be above 60 feet, and largemouth’s up to or near the surface.
During the fall, the spotted bass inhabiting rivers migrate downstream to winter in deep water pools; in the spring they move back upstream for the summer. At spawning time the male fish takes on the domestic chores of building the nest, fertilizing and guarding the eggs after they are deposited by the female and later protecting the fry until they are old enough to fend for themselves. The young spotted bass feed on insects and insect larvae until they are grown, and then switch their diet to small fish, frogs, and crayfish.
Experienced northern anglers must change their fishing techniques slightly to catch this southern fish. The spotted bass, like the smallmouth and largemouth found in the south, will lie in tight quarters beneath under-cut banks or beneath water hyacinths. The angler's plug or fly must hit close by or the fish will never see it. Fishermen often cast several times into a good hole before enticing the bass out with a perfect cast. Weedless lures take much of the strain out of fishing some areas.
