The Maldives: Paradise for surfers

In 1973 two Australian surfers, Tony Hussein Hinde and Mark Scanlon, were on their way to the island of Reunion Sri Lanka, but breaks shipwrecked off the coast of the island of Malé Maldives. This event was the catalyst for the beginning of the Maldives surf scene. Tony spent months trying to repair the wreck, but soon became distracted by the excellent surf conditions around the northern islands, and decided to stay. After becoming a citizen, is the Maldives managed to keep a secret exploration among friends for over 15 years. However, due to the ski resorts and more openness and increased tourism, Tony opened Atoll Adventures, a surf camp in mid-1980 - and he began to boom Maldives surf scene.

Over the years the Maldives has become a popular surfing destination with a browsing environment to suit beginners and experienced professionals. The average temperature water is about 28 º C and the conditions are fairly consistent throughout the surf season, which runs from mid February to November. Letters may last only a day or two weeks if you really want to go for their surf break.

For those of you who are a surfer occasionally or a total beginner, there are several surf schools to be able to care for their needs. A level one course will teach the basics, such as safety, equipment, reading the waves and how to catch. A level two you get on your board and surf in a short time. If you've got money you can hire a personal guide or teacher, private boats or even your own seaplane to take you to the best places.

There is a good opportunity to see some of the best surfers the world in the Association of Professional SriLankan Airlines Pro Surfing World Qualifying Series, held in June. Over 120 international surfers from 20 nations go to Pasta Point in Male 'Atoll to compete. Pasta Point is not only famous for its competition or its legendary waves, but is also the place where Tony Hussein Hinde setting his surf school and where unfortunately died in 2008.

Surfing may not be the first thing people think of when they think Maldives holiday but an experience worth keeping in mind if you fancy something a little different. It is also a good idea to check the dates of major events before trying to surf book because it can be quite busy.
