Fishing in the Panhandle region of Florida - Offshore or inshore, everything is fine

The Northwest Florida offers some of the best fishing opportunities in the Gulf Coast. Species range from the small sea trout large Blue Marlin over a thousand pounds.

One of the factors contributing to the good fishing is the lack development in the Panhandle. Drinking water contamination and lack of runoff from a small population has safe water estuaries and return fish spawning and reproduction of fish bait.

Another factor is the relatively close access to deep water compared to other areas of the Gulf Coast. Canyon De Soto is a sharp decrease in deep water which is famous for nearly a world record blue marlin. De Soto Canyon is only 95 miles from Destin Pass, 85 miles from Fort Walton Beach and 80 miles from Pensacola.

Other popular offshore species are dolphin, also known as Dorado, Wahoo, Sailfish and Red Snapper. Most of which can be caught within 30 miles of the coast, especially in the summer months.

Closer to shore, the fishermen are Kingfish, cobia, grouper and an occasional Tarpon. Spring fishing for cobia, ling sometimes called by locals, is one of the best in the country. Anglers fish near the coast usually after the pods of bait sardines and threadfin herring. The ships have towers, used to detect the cobia and the rays which have sometimes cobia following as rays up crabs and other tasty morsels of food in cobia. Most of the Panhandle beach docks have bait shops, with rods and reels for sale or rent. Many of them also are willing to give expert advice on which platforms to use and what bait was the best work recently.

Fishing in the bays and sounds in the Panhandle region are also very productive. The usual catch includes trout, Redfish, Black Drum, and founder. The sound Choctawhatchee Bay near Destin is a favorite place like St. Andrews Bay near Panama City Beach . small flats boats are very popular for those areas. Fishermen use both natural and artificial bait.

Charter boats for inshore fishing, and bay are available throughout the Florida Panhandle and will not need a license. Florida residents do not need a fishing license if fishing from shore or a fixed structure as a bridge or a dock. Non-residents need a fishing license to fish in any place except a licensed charter boat license vessel.
